In 1971 Herbert Simon wrote a quote that almost feels like a prediction. He said,
“What information consumes is rather obvious: It consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.”
Finding what to focus on in this day and age is an extreme challenge. Where do we start? There are problems everywhere and a list to sign up and support each and every one of them. The true challenge is that we cannot actually make a change on this level. A significant change in any area happens in smaller groupings no larger than the closest 150 people you know personally. Accepting and understanding this is huge and brings to light what we can change through our focus.
Our first priority should be our attitude. When we align our focus on what is known as Positive Mental Attitude or PMA, we can create major changes in each and every single person’s world. Adopting this mindset shields us from the negativity of the world, others, and ourselves.
For many people, that’s easier said than done. Here’s a simple approach to bringing PMA into your life. Start taking care of someone or something. When we place ourselves in a position where others depend on us, we have less time to sink into the dark depths of any negative abyss. If we only need to swim for ourselves, we might give up and choose to drown. However, when knowing others are counting on us to swim for them, we will take care of business. Caretaking is a daily task and requires your time, energy, and focus. When we prioritize our attention on carrying for others, we set our sights on what should be our priority and wash away the distractions. We get up, and we get moving!
The Law of Exchange by Brian Tracy states, “The amount you earn at any time is a reflection of the value that others place upon your contribution.” Your earnings often will come in more than a monetary value. Now that you have shown others that this can be done, they will develop the confidence that they can do the same. The math is simple here; confidence is intoxicating and contagious and will flow through your closet circles. It will guide them to do the same as you have, and together you will create ripples in the pond that will make the waves of change in multiple small groups; ultimately making the changes you wish to see on a much larger scale.
Leo Babauta said, “…watch your thoughts and not be controlled by them.” We must look carefully at the four walls in our minds. Expand them to think vastly. Paulo Coehlo mentions that magic is in the “negative” space around what others look at every day. Modify the way you think and then share that with the four walls of your house. You cannot evoke positive changes in the world unless you take care of your mind, your family, and the people you directly know. Your mind, and the relationships you care for every day are what will create the change in the world you wish to see. As we do we will understand what Lena Horne meant when she said, “It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.” Change the way you think and you will change the world.
