MARS Southwest Camp 2022 (review)
The weekend started on Thursday and continued until late Monday for our fifth annual MARS Southwest Camp! Everyone arrived safe and ready to train in what has become known as a marathon event. Friday opened up with Ron Balicki teaching JKD Sparring Techniques, Ed Stahl working some great Guard Passes, and Nicolas Saignac with touch-and-go Savate drills. Then we closed up with Victor Young sharing some killer Focus Mitt striking and Ron Balicki teaching Staff from Filipino Martial Arts and Muay Thai! As if the 10AM to 6PM training wasn’t enough, we went directly into Savate Rank Testing with Nicolas Saignac.

Saturday came quickly as we all worked through stiff and sore muscles. Ron Balicki started warming everyone up with Silat, and Nicolas Saignac dove deeper into Savate drills and skills. Then as a special treat, we created a two-hour block to cover Fight Choreography with Ron Balicki. This experience was a highlight as he took us through things he’s worked on and designed a little piece of choreography everyone could practice. Best of all, we set up cameras, and he worked with several people to help them be camera-ready if they ever get that phone call. Next, Nicolas Saignac got us back up and moving around with more great Savate Drills, and we ended the day with Ron Balicki teaching us Single Stick from the Filipino Martial Arts. We couldn’t close out the day without Kali and JKD Testing with Ron Balicki, which we hosted for both camp participants and students online through http://www.marsonlinetraining.com.

Then Sunday, we kicked off another amazing day of training with Ron Balicki teaching Silat, Jasmine Vanderpool teaching great Sparring Combinations, Nicolas Saignac building up through Sparring Drill requirements for Glove Testing. Then Matthew Wood took everyone through the meaning of Double Stick Running Attacks by having everyone simulate they were fighting multiple opponents. Finally, we closed out the day with Ron Balicki, keeping us all on point with great Knife Training.

There are so many people to list that made this year’s camp happen. Thank you to Sonja St Clair, Coach Vladimir Ochoa, and Brandyn Gil for their behind-the-scenes work. Also, thank you to Lance Love and Amy Tvinnereim for filling in the gaps as the camp proceeded. Big thank you to Monica Ibrahim for working with Amy and Sonja to set up dinner plans for everyone over the weekend. Thank you to our Guest Instructors, Victor Young, Ed Stahl, Matthew Wood, and Jasmine Vanderpool, for donating your time and showcasing what you do so well at your schools in Washington, North Carolina, and Colorado. Also, we must all give a big hug to Ed Sparks, who worked hard for three days to crystalize our memories with his photography. Last but not least, thank you to Ron Balicki and Nicolas Saignac for being our chief instructors every year and bringing your love for what you teach to our hearts and minds. We can't wait until the MARS Caribbean Camp!!!
