If you’ve ever watched any water flow, you’ll notice that when an object is in its path, it moves around, over, or under it. On a river, this is more apparent with the intensity of the water building as you go around dog-leg turns, through rapids, and pinch points where a large body of water then tries to funnel through a narrow pathway. If taken advantage of, all of these can boost your speed and assist you in reaching your goals.
A life off the river is no different as our energy should flow from each task and event on our list; however, just as things are going smoothly, our best buddy Murphy is always available to remind us that if anything could go wrong, it can and will. It could be as simple as waiting on the computer to render something, a team member to finish their part of a project, or an injury that stops us from doing what we were focusing on doing. If we adopt the concept of flowing like water in the river to our lives, we will find that we can still accomplish just as much and so much more. Instead of focusing on the negative output of the barrier holding us back or slowing us down, we must flow over, under, and around it until our patience and tenacity remove it from our path. Water is forever patient. It continues to flow, wash, and chisel away at everything in its path with enough time.
“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.” Bruce Lee (founder of our Jeet Kune Do or JKD)
While flowing around whatever falls in our pathway, we build stamina and learn to think with a more positive mindset; ultimately focusing less on what we can’t do and realigning our sites on what we can do. When the “patience” bar or spinning “wheel of death” presents itself, we can refer to our list of items that need to be accomplished and get into action. This action is what slowly dissolves the blockade in our path and is the mindset that helps us find our way through the cracks of whatever is slowing us down.
Create a list of action items according to their importance on hand so that as soon as something gets in your way, you can pivot and stay in action. Then as soon as the original task opens up, get back on tackling it.
To quote a scene from the movie Better Off Dead, “Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!”
